Why Technology?

“The only reason teachers need to use technology is to make learning more efficiently….,” so said Dr. Holder in Education 730 today.
I really appreciate that statement.
As the director of a classical program, I have to admit I have wondered exactly how much technology our students REALLY need to know. I don’t aspire for our students to spend hours playing the latest video games, learning the latest simulation technology, or cool new downloads and apps…just for the sake of knowing this info. In our world: knowledge must enable us to learn more and do more for the glory of God and His fulfillment of His plan for us.
With the learning of Greek and Latin students are better equipped to learn more languages. With the learning of logic our students learn to recognize faulty arguments and empty rhetoric. With the learning of history through Socratic discussion, our students learn to think critically and solve complex social problems.
Technology, like all tools, should be used to aid our students and our staff to better prepare us for tomorrows challenges. Today I learned to use Photoshop…as you can see, here I am “at the center of the universe.” I think often I think of myself that way…hope knowledge with grace brings me to wisdom of my true place in the universe.
